Polar Plunge 2009 - On Jan 31st four Sertoma members along with a few friends and family members jumped into the icy cold waters of Green Lake as part of the 5th Annual Polar Plunge. 212 people participated in the event and we helped to raise $33,000 for the Special Olympics of Minnesota.
We held our annual awards banquet on September 25th at Melvin's on the lake. Each year at our banquet we give out two awards. First is the Sertoman of the Year which is given to a member of our club who has done an outstanding job that year. That award went to Justin Bos. The other award we give out is the Service to Mankind award. This goes to a person in the community who we feel has gone above and beyond and given back. This year we gave the award to two soldiers who were killed in Iraq, Kyle Miller and Josh Schmit. Their families were present to accept the award on their behalf.
On August 21st the club hosted a golf outing in the afternoon at the Eagle Creek Golf Course. Members who were interested in golfing played 18 holes. After golfing a social was held and other members who didn't hit the links were invited to come and enjoy food, beverage, and comradery.
On May 17 the Willmar Sertoma Club hosted the Area 6 Special Olympics Track & Field meet. The club has put on this meet for many years and it has become a day that members look forward to. Members work doing various duties throughout the day: staging athletes, timing events, handing out awards, taking photos of all the athletes, and running concessions. It's a very rewarding day!
